Quietest air pumps for nano & shrimp tanks
Research-based, not hands-on. We haven't tested these products ourselves. This guide compiles manufacturer-published specs and recurring owner reports (e.g. r/shrimptank, 2024–2026). Specs checked October 2026 and may change. How we research
Air-driven sponge filters are the usual shrimp-tank recommendation, and pump noise is the main complaint. Piezoelectric pumps have no motor or diaphragm, so they're the quietest type, but their output suits roughly 15 gallons or less.
| Pump | Type | Published noise | Rated tank size |
|---|---|---|---|
| hygger MiniPro Clip | Piezo | ≤33 dB (maker) | 1-15 gal |
| Pawfly Mini 1.3W | Piezo | ~30 dB (maker) | small/nano |
| hygger AC Ultra Quiet | Diaphragm, dual outlet | ≤25 dB (maker, no conditions stated) | up to 600 gal |
| Uniclife Dual Outlet 64 GPH | Diaphragm | 25 dB on Low, ~45 dB at full (maker) | varies |
What the numbers don't tell you
- Maker dB figures rarely state the distance or setup, so treat them as ceilings rather than comparable measurements.
- Mounting matters as much as the model: a foam pad or hanging the pump cuts vibration noise.
- Use a check valve on the airline so water can't siphon back into the pump.
- Pick a pump with an adjustable outlet so you can turn the flow down for small sponge filters.
